New Bournville College Relocation

Simplex Foundations is installing foundation piles on the new Bournville College project which was recently commenced on the site of the former MG M Rover Works site at Longbridge, Birmingham.
The construction will provide a totally new five storey education facility, spread over numerous interlinked buildings, each of up to five storeys, delivering a large range of vocational training skills — including automotive and construction industry trades.
Simplex has deployed two CFA rigs on site to install approximately 600 piles of diameters ranging from 300mm to 600mm, working through the most severe winter weather conditions which have been encountered in the past 30 years.

Geological analysis prior to commencement of works revealed a near surface geotechnical fault which called for extensive site probing to corroborate its exact location and design appraisals to counter its effect. Simplex also deployed a senior geotechnical engineer on site specifically to monitor drilling records and excavated material samples during piling trials.

The piling platform was constructed by Shepherd Construction using lime stabilisation to counter the excessive surface water on site.
The project developer and client is St. Modwen Developments. The Main Contractor is Shepherd Construction. The total project value is in the region of £66m. Simplex’s contract value is approximately £200,000. The College will welcome its first students in September 2011. Project is due for completion in June 2011.
